Covered in Blood - Giveaway Winner - Courtney Claycomb - Astra Studios

Inspired By “Carrie

We all know the scene. Withdrawn and sensitive teen Carrie White (Sissy Spacek in the 1976 film) faces taunting from classmates at school and abuse from her fanatically pious mother (Piper Laurie, 1976) at home. When strange occurrences start happening around Carrie, she begins to suspect that she has supernatural powers. Invited to the prom by the empathetic Tommy Ross (William Katt, 1976), Carrie tries to let her guard down, but things eventually take a dark and violent turn as she has blood dumped all over her at prom.

A few weeks back we held a raffle for a photoshoot on the Astra Studios Facebook Page.

Courtney was our winner!
I asked what she wanted to do, and it being October she had the awesome idea of doing a blood pour photoshoot.
Our resident Special FX artist whipped up some fake blood, and we met up to take the photos. I chose a street that looked a lot like Elm Street to me. (My favorite horror films.) Courtney brought a vintage prom dress (I think it was a prom dress) and a flannel to take some general fall photos before the shoot.

Speaking Of…

A Brief Note and Concept

I know you clicked this link excited to see Courtney get drenched in blood. And trust me, it’s well worth the wait! If you’ve read this far in I just wanted to take a moment and say thank you for your time and your readership. Every single one of you make it possible for me to be an artist in the modern world.

But without further ado, as the air crisped with the setting sun it was time to change into the beautiful dress we were so set on destroying. After a brief intermission Courtney returned, and the outfit was perfect! Again this street setting really brought home the feeling of prom photos in the front yard. I didn’t want to clean up a gymnasium so we opted for an expedited timeline compared to the movie for a bloody pour in the yard!

Check out her amazing outfit and some of the photos we snagged before the blood pour. I told her I will only destroy that dress if we can photograph it first.

Let There Be Blood

Next step was the actual blood pour. Courtney’s husband assisted on the shoot by being our designated blood pouring friend. At first he seemed unsure but then as he realized what he got to do next I think I saw a mischievous grin or two pop up on that ladder.

The blood was THICK. Goopy syrupy movie ready blood from the visual FX master himself, Walter Bender. Walter dropped this blood off on a late night run out of state for another project, we can’t say how much we appreciate that.
Thanks to the entire team, and the efforts of everyone involved we got some really knock out images.

But, without further ado…

Even a bucket of blood can’t dull our shine
